Silenced ~ review

silenced-korean-film Silenced AKA The Crucible

This movie I saw was listed on Netflix and I noticed Gong Yoo was in it. So I decided to read the summery

Amid a multitude of cover-ups, a caring teacher attempts to publicly expose faculty members who are molesting some hearing-impaired students.

I have seen a Japanese movie about disabilities in Japan “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish”, I don’t if that movie was based on a true story but Silenced is based on a novel and a true story. Not that that was what only drew to watch this movie. But I am currently working as a teacher in Japan so I can understand what its like to want to help your students if they seem distant.

I do have to admit, some of the dialogue was lost on me as Japan Netflix only had Japanese subs to the Korean Audio. So I was probably only able to understand 50% (I do know some Korean too, which helps). But I still wanted to watch.

I’ve got to say that I loved the acting and how the actors worked well together. When it comes to not fully understanding the language, the action of emotions plays a huge role. And so with that, I was able to understand the scenes and what they were about.

I would really love to watch this movie again, with English subtitles next time, just to be able to fully understand what was actually being said. But I found this movie so moving. I tried to learn sign language back when I was a Junior/Middle school student for a year. I loved learning a new way to communicate, however practising was difficult. So I gave up after a year although I never lost interest.

Now, I don’t want to go into the story, because I feel like what I might say will spoil it. I will say this shows how some countries still abuse those who are impaired in some aspect. As well as possibly portraying those who are willing to help cover up their actions with whatever means they can. I honestly cannot tell you if this is still in Korea today, because I’ve never stayed in this country long enough, let alone in the smaller cities or towns.

Overall, I would recommend you watch this movie. Although, be warned, its not for the faint hearted. This is a R+18 movie as some scenes are a little graphic due to the content of the movies story. But please don’t be put off. If you do decide to watch it, please feel free to comment below.

역린 ~ Review

Fatal Encounter

역린 A.K.A. Fatal Encounter is the first movie since Hyun Bin finished his miltary service.

I wasn’t really sure what was really going on most of the time. But I got to see Hyun Bin play an interesting character. Much more than I can say his role in 사랑한다, 사랑하지 않는다 (Come Rain, Come Shine).

The plot itself is very basic and understandable, its just some times I wasn’t sure if some scene’s were needed. It felt a little like it was jumping around a bit to much.

On the plus side, at one point you get to see a rather buff Hyun Bin exercising in his room/library/study. Its good to watch if you like action films as the fight scene’s are well done. You might even wish an arrow would hit the young Queen Hye Gyeong as she is sly scheming cow. But then what is a good movie without one of those bitchy characters that you just have to hate.

Overall, its a good movie if you like to watch Korean period drama’s. The acting was well done and I did like watching it. Even with a bit of a fan service. But I felt that Hyun Bin’s face has lost some of his natural fat. It just looks too skinny right now.

At the end of the day

Firstly, I must apologise for this post in advance as it is the end of the day. Its been a long time since I wrote my thoughts down, so there may not any logical thought behind the change in topics.

Recently, I’ve been watching a lot of drama’s, some of which I have yet to write a review for. But I guess I’ve really been watching them because its all totally fantasy and will never happen in real life. Especially as I am watching a lot of romance drama’s. Yet it makes me realise how much I am totally lacking in that department. I always say I’m waiting for the right guy. But its not like I am actually putting myself out there. I guess the reason is because I’m in a foreign country and I will never be fully excepted in this society. I fully except that. It will be the same in any country. Yet, how can I say I am looking when I don’t really go out. For a start, I have a major paranoia problem mix that with a low self-esteem and add in very little knowledge of Japanese. I feel its okay if you know a lot of Japanese and can go out and meet people. But its difficult for me and I don’t know what to really say. It may seem like I am making a lot of excuses and not doing my self in favours. But it is really difficult.

However, I had recently bought the Genki textbook and workbook to help review the very little that I know. It is really helpful to start over and it gives you little tasks and helps you with writing and grammar. It is for Japanese, but I am tempted to translate into Korean too, as I am trying to study both of them. So I might work on the Korean translation tomorrow when I’ve finished preparing my lessons for Tuesday. I want to be able to speak in both Languages before I eventually return back to the UK. Hopefully, I will find someone before I return back to the UK. But I will have to see how that goes. The real reason I came to Japan was to learn the language and be surrounded by it everyday so I had to learn. So instead of drawing, I seem to be spending most of my free time studying. I just want to make progress.

SO if there is anyone out there who wants to help me practice Korean/Japanese, then please contact me!!!!!!!

3 Days ~ REVIEW

3 DaysThe Micky (Park Yu Chun) fan girl is let loose once again!

And the man is back! It is hard to believe that his last Drama was 보고싶다 back in 2012. But this time he is not a cop, but bodyguard to the president of South Korea.

I saw the trailer this when I think I was watching 별에서 온 그대. It had Yu Chun in it and I was curious as to what kind of character he would play this time.

His character this time gets some cool fight scene’s this time where he gets to show his flexibility as a dancer into some very nice choreographed fight scene’s.

I do wonder if its Yu Chun’s personal preferences, or WHY THE HELL DOES HE WEAR TURTLE NECKS IN HIS DRAMA’S?????????????????????????????????????????????????????? This question has baffled me for such a long time. No offence, Yu Chun, but please stop! They really don’t suit you. You are sexy in a suit, a lot cut t-shirt, and even a cardigan. But Turtle necks do nothing for you!! It just makes your head look small.

And why must he cry in all his drama’s?? I’ve yet to see a Yu Chun drama where doesn’t cry. I want to see him play a strong character who protects and doesn’t have an emotional break down because something bad happened to someone he knows.

It was a very interesting drama about a guy who is trying to find the reason behind his father’s sudden death and it relating to a confidential document that he had with him at the time. It has a few confusing scene’s where I wondered if they were really important or not. But it was interesting to watch. I wish there was more chemistry development between to the two lead characters, but this wasn’t a romance drama, so it suited the genre really well.

It is worth the watch if you like the detective kind of drama’s where there isn’t a strong presence of romance blooming over a few episodes. It really looks about one’s struggles to have to deal with personal emotions and their very important job where there could be huge consequences if something goes wrong.

But please watch and then write a comment below and tell me what you thought.

마녀의 연애 ~ REVIEW

Witch's RomanceDefinitely the best drama of 2014! I really wanted to marathon it, but I did well with my will power and watched it while it was still airing so only watching two episodes a week.

This drama was hilarious and romantic. I know that a prince is never going to sweep me off my feet like Dong Ha,  but at least I can dream.

It was great to see a young male lead playing a role where isn’t really forcing himself on the female. Instead, it was more of the supportive, caring and sexy side. With the added humour moments with his best friend acting like children, but it totally suited their characters.

This drama also interested me because of the age gap.  With the female being 14 years older than the male. But he is still totally legal and I wouldn’t push him away. I was a little sad when the fortune teller got dropped somewhere in the middle. She was an interesting character and I wondered where she would appear next. Only to never come T__T

This really is a romantic comedy that kept me entertained and I will definitely watch it again. Its a great recommendation for someone who has been working for a while and not gone looking for love only to find them selves falling for someone again after so long.

Its definitely worth the watch!!!  Also, please listen to the OST, 박서준/ Park Seo Jun has a great track which is used for some of the endings of the episodes. He has a great voice, so watch out for him!

매리는 외박중 ~ REVIEW

Marry Me MaryThis is definitely one of those drama’s that most people have actually watched. But I didn’t really have any interest in it until now.

It is definitely one of those drama’s that you hope doesn’t get too cliché and it could well possibly go down that road. At first, most of the characters annoyed me. Mae Ri had this annoying side where she just didn’t let anything go. It was really stalker-ish at the start.

At first, it took me a while to get into it. I didn’t really marathon this drama, because it wasn’t really striking my attention. It was refreshing to see a drama where the main couple were loyal to each other and stayed together even after many misunderstandings. Usually after one misunderstanding, the couple have this over dramatic split and one of them tries to win the other back. But not in Marry Me Mary! It really does make Jang Geun Seok’s character seem like a guy with unshakable feelings. Standing by Mae Ri and always believes what she says. If ever a guy really existed, he would be too pure and a little crazy… surely?!?!

It really is a good drama to watch. It did have some funny moments between the two main male characters, which lifted the mood in places. But I am still unsure if I could really recommend this drama to watch. It didn’t really appeal to me. It was only the rock music part that caught my attention really.  The supporting characters are a little over baring and I wanted to slap Director Bang to make sure she didn’t even appear in any scene’s.

If you are a true Korean Drama fan, then please watch it if you haven’t. Or if you have, please tell me what you thought of it!!

옥탑방 왕세자 ~ Review

Rooftop Prince옥탑방 왕세자 or Rooftop Prince

Again, sorry for the late review of this drama T_T

I watched this drama after I watched “Missing You” because I wanted to see how good Micky would be in another drama.

This really didn’t disappoint my expectations. After the loss of princess, Crown Prince Lee Gak and his three comrades try to find the culprits. Instead,  find themselves in the future with no where to go and no idea of what is going on. By chance, they meet Park Ha and end up having to stay at her apartment.

This is a really nice drama, which some epic comedy moments. Song Man Bo is my favouite comrade, who really does pull of a beautiful women very well but then looks super hot in a suit. But the three comrades really do make the perfect comedy trio who are very supportive and loyal of their Prince.

This can be cliché at times and Lee Gak tries his best to show he likes Park Ha in his on way. Although, he can be really clumsy and make a lot of mistakes, I think that is the characters charm. No one is perfect, not even a Crown Prince. If only I could find my Prince……

The romance between Lee Gak and Park Ha is developed really nicely and makes you really hope they get to be together. Of course, helped with the amazing supporting cast that makes it a must see drama.

보고싶다 ~ Review

Missing You보고싶다 or Missing You

I really should first apologise for writing this review so late! I actually finished watching this drama in August 2013, but I didn’t realise that I never wrote a review. Sorry!

This drama really did make me like Micky more as an actor. And he didn’t take of his shirt to interest me! I really love watching Yun Eun Hye since I saw her movie “Little Black Dress”. She definitely is definitely a good actress. I did marathon this drama because it was so moving and I really hated the young guy who wanted the girl all to his self and is a total selfish bastard. But  that’s just my opinion.

I loved how this drama didn’t so focus on the female. Instead, it showed how Han Jeong Woo was in constant search for her and never once believed she was dead. I really loved this view rather than it always being about a girl being in love. It had Micky showing different emotion’s and I loved his acting. He adorable smile won me over.

The only down side, is I really hated Gang Hyeong Jun. He was this obsessed character, who used money to keep people close to him. He was a spoilt child who I just totally detested by. But the sweet romance between Lee Su Yeon and Jeong Woo was romantic, even with Jeong Woo as the focus of trying to win her again and show that he has always had her in his heart. Which girl wouldn’t love that?!?!

If you are fed up with the cliché drama’s, then please give this one a try. It really was a good watch!

미남이 시네요 ~ Review

You're Beautiful
미남이 시네요 or You’re Beautiful Review.

I have finally gotten round to seeing this drama. I put it on my list after watching the Japanese version “美男ですね”. Its taken me three years to get around to watching it, I am so bad (>.<)

I was actually looking forward to watching this because it has two of my favourite male singers in the cast. With Jeong Yong Hwa (C.N.Blue) who was in Heart Strings with Park Sin Hye who is also in this drama. Then there is Lee Hong Gi (F.T.Island), this is the first time I’ve seen him act but he is so adorable as Jeremy.

I really loved this drama. Although, I was a little disappointed that the two main actor’s couldn’t really play instruments like Yong Hwa and Hong Gi. But I guess that can’t be helped. But the cast went well together and I was really cheering for Soo Woo most of the time. He really did care for Mi Nam. But I guess he couldn’t get close after Tae Kyeong got close to her and showed her a different side that no one else saw.

If you have seen 美男ですね and haven’t seen the original version, then you really need to. The Japanese drama just isn’t the same and I really do prefer the Korean drama for sure. The characters relationships deepen better and it has more episodes so you can really understand the characters emotions more.

This will never disappoint a drama lover. Even more so as it develops in the perfect way and it doesn’t feel rushed or incomplete.

My Top 10 Korean Dramas

A friend asked me if I could suggest any Korean dramas that someone new to K-Drama’s should watch. So here is my top 10 drama’s!

#10 Dream High

Dream High
Staring: Kim Soo Hyun, Taec yeon, Suzy, Eun Jeong, IU and Woo Yong

Admittedly, I only saw this recently as I really caved in and wanted to see what it was like. I am a fan of 2PM and Woo Yong is my favourite member. So It was perfect to see what he would like acting. With reguards to this drama, based in a music school where artists can debut and begin their music career. Its a little different to what I have seen, so it was nice to see something fresh. It had an array of characters, which helps, although the girls can just be too bitchy that I guess they really wanted to show more of the horrible side to trying to get into the music industry. Its a drama that should be on everyone’s watch list, and as it isn’t really focused on romance, so it helps.

#9 Oh! My Lady

Oh! My LadyStarring: Choi Si Won and Chae Rim

This was the first Korean drama that I watched, so it holds a special place in my heart. This is a romance drama, so be prepared for the awkward tension moments where the characters try to work out their feelings. But its not so bad. It does have the added bonus of ha
ving Siwon-ssi showing off his abs and doing bad acting and apparently poor dancing skills. I got a bit confused by the dancing skills part, seeing as he is a member of Super Junior, but its hard to tell because he isn’t dancing in most of the MV’s… he seems to be absent doing other things. This is a good drama that got me into Korean drama’s. I think most of their drama’s has some sort or romance in it, so you can’t escape them. But this isn’t really focused on their romance but how can a lady help a man stop being childish and become the man he is meant to be.

#8 Shut Up! Flower Boy Band

Shut Up! Flower Boy Band
Staring: Yu Min Gyu, L, Seong Jun, Lee Hyeon Jae and Kim Min Seok

It is again, a music based drama. Following a band who want to be famous and show people they are not just delinquents. They might be rough and stand up for themselves, but they really just want to show they have what it takes. Its a great drama that I wish they had explored the characters more. But this drama is part of the “Flower Boy” series, there is two other’s series that are not connected in any way, apart from the name having “Flower Boy” in it. But do watch them too, they have good ratings too.

#7 Faith

FaithStaring: Lee Min Ho and Kim Hee Sun

This was my favourite drama of 2012. This is more about time travel and how the main female adapts to a different life helping the very strict but hot Choi (Lee Min Ho). Its a very interesting drama to watch. I couldn’t stop watching it, but I am a Lee Min Ho fan, so that could be why 😛 This does show a little more of the romance towards the end of the series, otherwise, it focuses on the relationships of the other characters. Especially the King and Queen of the era.

#6 Heartstrings

HearstringsStaring Jeong Yong Hwa and Park Sin Hye

If you can’t tell by now that I love music, then what have you been reading for the past few minutes?! Again, set in an Arts school, this shows how students from the traditional and the modern courses have pride in their skills and think they are better than the other. However, it changes once they get to know each other. Its a heart warming drama that shows you don’t have to always follow what your parents think your life should be like. But you should find your own dream. The chemistry between the characters are great and the songs they use are great. Apart from Carmen.. Sorry, I HATE THAT SONG! I had to bite my tongue during my HS Music Exam when it was a piece we had to listen to.

#5 City Hunter

City HunterStaring: Lee Min Ho and Park Min Yong

And the first Lee Min Ho drama that I watched has appeared at #5. This is really focused on Lee Yun Seong getting revenge after he finds out that his step father isn’t who he thought he is after he hears how his real father died. Thus letting Lee Min Ho show a really sexy, bad-ass side of the character. That and I really love mysterious guy. I really liked how it showed Yun Seong putting up walls to not let anyone know his identity and protecting himself.

#4 Missing You

Missing YouStaring: Bak “Micky” Yu cheon and Yun Eun Hye

This is a romance and tragedy drama. So be prepared to see the tears and heart ache! This drama really did make me like Micky more as an actor. And he didn’t take of his shirt to interest me! I really love watching Yun Eun Hye since I saw her movie “Little Black Dress”. She definitely is definitely a good actress. I marathoned this drama because it was so moving and I really hated the young guy who wanted the girl all to his self and is a total selfish bastard. But  that’s just my opinion.

#3 Coffee Prince

Coffee PrinceStaring Yun Eun Hye, Gong Yu, Lee SeonGyun and ChaeJeong

And I found this drama while watching Korean Drama Kissing video’s… yes its sad, I was bored, GO A HEAD AND JUDGE ME!!! It was to help me find romance drama’s. This seemed like an interesting one to watch, and it didn’t disappoint. This was the first drama I saw Yun Eun Hye in.

It was interesting seeing her play a boyish character. It did get a little strange when Choe hang yeol (Gong Yu) as almost being gay. But he was kind of cute though.

#2 You Who Came From The Stars

You Who Came From The StarsStaring: Kim Soo Hyun and Jeon Ji Hyeon

I have written a proper review on this drama – https://sazzy-bu.co.uk/별에서-온-그대-review/ I am a Kim Soo Hyun fan after I saw him in the movie Secretly And Greatly.

This is a romance drama, but with a sexy 400 year old alien (Kim Soo Hyun) as the main guy. Now, I have to say that Jeon Ji Hyeon was the most annoying character and I wish she wasn’t like she was. I hated her use of American english that made my teeth grind. But she was bearable towards the end.

#1 Secret Garden

Secret GardenStaring: Hyeon Bin and Ha Ji Won

I have also written a review for this series – https://sazzy-bu.co.uk/secret-garden-review/ I had to watch this drama because it had gotten good reviews and was highly recommended. So I gave it a try and I really have to admit its not the normal girl loves boy. But its the boy who chases after the tomboyish girl instead.

This is an interesting watch and its one that everyone should see. I really love the characters and the chemistry between them.

So that is my top 10 Korean drama’s. If anyone asks, I can do a Japanese drama too. I might even make a music artist top 10 too, depending on my mood.
